class="ez-toc-section-end">

The source is an email OpenAI sent to advertisers on October 20 — published the same day by Search Engine Roundtable — and OpenAI’s own help page, “Creative enhancements for ChatGPT Ads”. Together they say:

Creative enhancements are enabled by default for new and existing self-serve and BPO campaigns starting October 30, 2026. Sales-managed accounts are not affected.

Existing opt-outs are preserved. If you had already turned enhancements off at account or campaign level, your choice carries over.

Campaign settings override the account default. You can set the account one way and carve out exceptions per campaign.

One honest wrinkle on the date, because the record matters: OpenAI’s advertiser email said Friday, October 30. The help page initially said Thursday, October 29 — and briefly October 31 — before settling on October 30. PPC Land’s timeline of the announcement documents the email and the shifting help-page dates. Opt out before the earlier date and you were covered either way.

The timing is not accidental. On October 21, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 89 countries with more than 100,000 advertisers on the platform; on October 26, a multi-image ad format opened as a beta. ChatGPT Ads is scaling fast — and creative enhancements are the automation layer underneath all of it.

What ChatGPT Ads Creative Enhancements Can Change

OpenAI’s help page says the system uses “your existing ad and landing-page content to adapt your message”, taking the conversation — or the user’s interests — into account. Variations can be prepared in advance or generated in real time. When enabled, “these ads can run automatically without requiring you to review or approve each version”, and Ads Manager shows no preview of every version.

Four things can change:

Headlines and descriptions

The AI can rewrite — or write entirely new — headlines and descriptions to tie your offer to the conversation the ad appears in. Your approved copy is the starting material, not the final word.

Images

Images can be resized to fit the ad format — fine in theory, risky if your creative was composed for a specific crop.

Destination URLs

This is the one to read twice. OpenAI can “optimize” the destination URL, sending the click to a different page on your website that it judges more relevant. As Search Engine Journal noted, the help page says nothing about how tracking parameters are passed forward when the destination changes, or whether advertisers can exclude certain pages.

Translations

Ad text can be translated into other languages to match the user. Useful reach expansion — or brand-voice roulette, depending on your vertical.

And the control itself is all-or-nothing: one toggle covers all four changes. You cannot allow image resizing while blocking headline rewrites. It is the whole package or nothing.

Why This Is the Sequel to Meta’s October Terms Change

If this feels familiar, it should. Last week we covered Meta’s revised Commercial Terms, effective November 20 — the same pattern, one platform over: AI enhancement features moving from opt-in to default-on, with advertisers given a short window to find the off switch.

First Meta flipped the switch; now OpenAI has flipped the same one. The industry’s approval boundary is moving from approving copy to managing settings — which rewards advertisers who audit deliberately and punishes everyone who assumes “default” means “safe”.

What It Means for US Advertisers

Three implications deserve your full attention:

Your landing page is now source material for copy you will never preview. Every page on your site is a potential input to ad variations that run without your sign-off. Thin pages, outdated offers, placeholder text — all fair game for the enhancement engine.

You are solely responsible for what the AI writes. Section 5.3 of OpenAI’s Advertising Terms makes the advertiser “solely responsible” for each campaign, including AI-generated outputs — and it explicitly covers “any optional tool or feature that is enabled by default and remains enabled”. If the AI rewrites your headline into something non-compliant, that is your problem, not OpenAI’s. For regulated verticals — legal, finance, healthcare — that sentence should decide your setting for you.

There is a reporting blind spot. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR and attributed conversions at campaign, ad group and ad level — but there is no report showing each enhanced version individually. And OpenAI adds its own caveat: changes over time “do not, on their own, establish the effect of creative enhancements”. You can see performance move; you cannot cleanly attribute the move to the feature.

None of this is hypothetical. If you run ChatGPT Ads and have not touched the setting, enhancements are on right now, rewriting against your landing pages as you read this.

The ChatGPT Ads Creative Enhancements Audit: What to Do This Week

Check your setting. In Ads Manager, open Manage settings and confirm whether creative enhancements are on at the account level — then check each campaign, because a campaign-level setting overrides the account default. An account-wide “off” does not guarantee every campaign is off.

Make the call per campaign. Turn it off for compliance-sensitive, brand-critical and high-spend campaigns. Consider leaving it on for exactly one low-risk campaign as a controlled test — the campaign-level override makes this possible without betting the account.

Audit your landing pages. Every page is now potential ad copy. Fix thin content, outdated pricing, expired offers and placeholder text before the AI starts quoting them to customers.

Protect your tracking. OpenAI’s ad creation guide tells advertisers to add UTM tags to each ad’s destination URL — but the help page does not explain how those parameters survive when the AI changes the destination. Verify in analytics that attributed traffic still carries your tags; if it does not, that alone is a reason to opt out.

Set a review cadence. Watch CTR and conversion rate at the ad level weekly. Remember there is no version-level report, so treat sustained shifts after October 30 as your signal — and keep your test campaign isolated so the signal stays readable.

Should You Leave It On?

It depends on what the AI has to work with. If you cannot audit every landing page before the AI starts reading them, a blanket opt-out is the safe default — off at the account level, then selectively test. If your pages are tight, your vertical is unregulated and your tracking is verified, a controlled test on one campaign may be worth running. OpenAI calls the feature “designed to” improve performance and publishes no performance data, so treat the effect as unknown until you measure it yourself.

One reassurance from the help page, for the skeptics: creative enhancements do not change ChatGPT’s answers. Ads are separate from answers and clearly labeled — the automation touches your ad, not the model’s response.

The broader lesson is the one Meta taught last month: on AI ad platforms, the default is the product decision. Whoever controls the default controls your creative — unless you go and turn it off.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements switch on?

October 30, 2026, for new and existing self-serve and BPO campaigns.
