You can now rank Google Search as High priority, drop partner and Display channels to Low, and cap what the low tier may spend each day. For US small businesses heading into the expensive holiday season on tight lead budgets, this is the most practical Google Ads update of the year.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What Happened: Google Ads Channel Prioritization Announced Oct 14

How Google Ads Channel Prioritization and Budget Allocation Work

Why It Matters for US Small Businesses

What to Do Now: 7 Steps for Your Account

FAQ: Google Ads Channel Prioritization

When will I see channel prioritization in my Google Ads account?

Is the budget allocation percentage a hard spending cap?

What happens to my Search campaigns’ Display Network traffic in February 2027?

What Happened: Google Ads Channel Prioritization Announced Oct 14

Google announced the update in a post on its Google Ads & Commerce blog by Tal Akabas, Director of Product Management for Google Ads, after a press roundtable on October 13 under an embargo that lifted at 8:00 AM Pacific on October 14.

There are two controls, and they do different jobs. Channel prioritization lets you tag each channel as High or Low priority. High-priority channels are funded first — within your target if you run Target CPA or Target ROAS — and whatever budget remains flows to the Low-priority channels. Budget allocation goes on top of that: for any channel set to Low priority, you can specify a maximum percentage of your daily budget it may use. The percentage is calculated against your campaign’s average daily budget, not its actual spend. Set it to 0% and Google will not spend on that channel at all.

Every channel starts at High priority — nothing in your account changes until you act. The controls roll out progressively from October 15, 2026, across Search, Shopping, Performance Max, and Demand Gen, in the Google Ads interface and Search Ads 360. API and Editor support come later, and manager accounts cannot apply the settings in bulk.

How Google Ads Channel Prioritization and Budget Allocation Work

Which channels you can rank depends on the campaign type. In a Search campaign, Google Search, Search partners, and the Google Display Network can each get their own priority level — the most granular control in the release. In Performance Max and Demand Gen, Google’s own surfaces (Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Discover) are grouped together as “Google channels,” so you cannot rank YouTube below Search there.

The settings apply at account, campaign, and shared-budget level, so you can set an account default per campaign type and override it for individual campaigns.

Before you touch the settings, understand the small print:

The cap is best-effort, not a hard stop. Google’s own wording: its tools will “aim” to keep spend within the limit. Daily spend on a low-priority channel may occasionally exceed your allocation, including on days when your campaign overdelivers its average daily budget. Monitoring stays your job.

The percentage points at the average daily budget. If your campaign overdelivers to $2,000 on a $1,000 budget day, the 5% cap still points at $50 — Google does not promise the channel stays there.

It resets every day. Unspent or overspent amounts do not carry over.

Priority only matters when the budget is the constraint. In Target CPA or Target ROAS campaigns that are not limited by budget, channel prioritization alone generally does not change how spend is distributed — the budget allocation percentage is the lever that does the work there.

Coverage of the mechanics adds two wrinkles: Demand Gen supports prioritization but not percentage allocations, and campaign total budgets only support the controls for Demand Gen.

Why It Matters for US Small Businesses

For years, the Search partners decision was a checkbox. Leave it ticked and some of your budget went to syndicated search sites you could not inspect at the site level; untick it and you gave up whatever good traffic it was quietly sending. Most US small businesses simply turned partners off — and many turned the Display Network inside Search off too — because neither could be trusted with an unguarded share of a limited budget. That all-or-nothing setup is now replaced with a middle option.

The stakes are real. Research by Intelligency Group in June 2025 found Search partner placements delivered 37% lower return on ad spend than Google Search. On a $2,000 monthly budget, a careless partner share is the difference between a profitable month and a wasted one — a leak our breakdown of where Google Ads budgets get wasted puts alongside missing negative keywords and broken conversion tracking.

Timing matters as much as the mechanics. Google explicitly positions the release for the holiday run-up — exactly when unguarded spend hurts most: CPCs climb, competition thickens, and a budget with no channel discipline bleeds faster. Advertisers who avoided Search partners and the Display Network can now test both with a defined ceiling instead of a leap of faith.

And there is a deadline attached. Starting in February 2027, the current spend-allocation setup for Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on goes away, and channel spending may shift. Google’s own advice for keeping today’s behavior is to set the Display Network to Low priority with a 50% budget allocation — but do not copy that 50% blindly. It preserves the old setup, which was rarely what a lead-gen advertiser would have chosen deliberately. Use the deadline as a reason to look at what Display inside Search is actually producing for you, then pick a cap you would sign off on.

What to Do Now: 7 Steps for Your Account

1. Check whether the card is in your account. Look under Account settings for the Channel Prioritization card, then per campaign type. The rollout is progressive, so if it is not there, set a weekly reminder.

2. Segment by network before you set anything. Pull the last 90 days on your Search campaigns and compare Google Search against Search partners on cost per qualified lead — not clicks or form fills, but leads that became customers in your CRM. This single report decides whether partners earn High priority or a Low tier with a cap.

3. Set an account default. Google Search = High priority. Search partners = Low priority with a single-digit percentage cap (5–10% is a sensible start). The Display Network inside a Search campaign = Low with 0% unless you have proof it produces real business. A guide to the new partner channel controls reaches the same conclusion: low priority with a small cap beats switching partners off, because a hard off switch can starve Smart Bidding of signal.

4. Override per campaign where the data says so. A brand campaign defending your own business name and a cold prospecting campaign rarely deserve the same partner rules. Campaign-level overrides exist for exactly this.

5. Put a calendar reminder on the February 2027 migration. For every Search campaign with the Display Network on, decide your deliberate allocation before Google migrates it for you — do not just inherit Google’s 50% preservation of the status quo.

6. Monitor actual spend against the cap weekly. Best-effort, calculated on average daily budget, reset daily — on overdelivery days the channel can overshoot. Make the network-segment check part of your weekly routine; the cap is a preference, not a guarantee.

7. Expect nothing to change in headroom campaigns unless you set a percentage. If your Target CPA or Target ROAS campaigns are not limited by budget, priority tiers alone will not redistribute spend — the allocation percentage is the working lever there. Worth revisiting your budget framework while you are at it.

FAQ: Google Ads Channel Prioritization

When will I see channel prioritization in my Google Ads account?

Rollout began October 15, 2026, and progresses over the coming months across Search, Shopping, Performance Max, and Demand Gen. Check under Account settings for the Channel Prioritization card — and note the settings cannot be applied from a manager account.

Is the budget allocation percentage a hard spending cap?

No. Google describes it as best-effort: spend on a Low-priority channel may occasionally exceed your allocation, particularly on days the campaign overdelivers its average daily budget. The percentage is calculated on the average daily budget, resets each day, and unspent amounts do not carry over. Setting it to 0% stops spend on that channel.

What happens to my Search campaigns’ Display Network traffic in February 2027?

For Search campaigns with the Google Display Network turned on, the current Display Expansion spend setup goes away and channel spending may shift. To preserve today’s configuration, Google recommends setting the Display Network to Low priority with a 50% budget allocation. Decide your own number deliberately instead of copying the default.

Running Google Ads on a small budget with no room for channel leaks? Our Google Ads management starts with a free audit of where your spend is actually going — network segments included.

On October 14, 2026, Google Ads announced google ads channel prioritization — two new optional budget controls that answer one of the oldest advertiser complaints: why does…

[6

post-92","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-google-ads
["GET
